ここ数年にわたる生成AIの急速な進化は、人類に新たな可能性をもたらす一方で、未知の脅威も予感させています。
しかし、膨大なデータから生成されるものは、しばしば多様性を欠き、平均化された“典型的”な世界へと向かう傾向にあります。

本作は、画像生成AI「Stable Diffusion」を用い、「typical（典型的）」という言葉をプロンプトに組み込むことで、AIが“典型的”をどのように捉え、表現するのかを探求しています。

“典型的な平和”“典型的な大統領”“典型的なテロリスト”“典型的な愛”─。

無限の可能性を秘めていたはずの生成AIが生み出す“Typical World（典型的な世界）”には、
私たちの未来への問いが隠れています。

本書は、2024年11月に世界最大級の写真フェア〈PARIS PHOTO〉で発表され、欧州の読者から高い評価を受けました。
この度、2025年1月11日から2月9日まで、東京・渋谷のアートギャラリー〈HECTARE〉にて開催される、苅部太郎個展「洞窟の解剖学」に合わせて、国内での販売を開始いたします。

　本作で使用したStable Diffusionは、現在世界中で使われている主な画像生成AIツールのひとつで、特定の地域の特定の企業が開発している。どこかの誰かのものの見方の物差しで作られている以上、生成される画像は一見虚構の世界だけで完結しているようでいて、現実の社会的規範や政治性、信念体系や偏見がたっぷりと反映されている。

　画像生成AIで画像を生み出すプロンプトとして、「typical」に続けて、私の物差しで選んだ言葉を追加してみる。すると、いまのAIが見せたい典型的な世界が写し出される。そのTypical Worldは、あらゆる次元で現実世界と影響し合い、特定の世界観が増幅されている。

　光を失った洞窟の闇の中では、自分の影と他者の影を見分けることは、難しい。

苅部太郎（かりべ・たろう）
1988年愛知県生まれ、東京都在住。 写真メディアや人・機械の認識システムの根源に立ち戻りながら、「ものを見る経験」の実相を考察する。心理学・感染症予防・金融・ITに携わった後に写真表現をはじめる。写真技術はHarry Gruyaert / Magnum Photosなど複数の写真家の助手などを通じて習得。

In recent years, the rapid evolution of generative AI has opened up vast new possibilities for humanity—while also hinting at unknown threats.
Yet what is generated from massive datasets often lacks diversity, trending instead toward an “averaged,” homogenized reality—a typical world.

This work explores how the image-generating AI, Stable Diffusion, interprets and visualizes the word “typical” when it is embedded directly into the prompt.

“Typical peace.”
“Typical president.”
“Typical terrorist.”
“Typical love.”

The Typical World created by generative AI—once heralded as a harbinger of infinite creative potential—poses quiet but urgent questions about our future.

This book was first unveiled in November 2024 at PARIS PHOTO, one of the world’s largest photography fairs, where it received critical acclaim from European audiences.
Its domestic release coincides with The Anatomy of the Cave, a solo exhibition by Taro Karibe at HECTARE Gallery, Tokyo, running from January 11 to February 9, 2025.

The Stable Diffusion model used in this work is one of the most widely used generative image AI tools in the world today, developed by a specific company in a specific region.
Because it is built upon someone’s particular worldview—someone’s metrics for seeing—the images it generates, while seemingly self-contained fictions, are deeply saturated with real-world social norms, political biases, belief systems, and prejudices.

By pairing the word “typical” with terms I selected through my own lens, I prompted the AI to reveal the kind of “typical” world it wants to show us.
That Typical World mirrors and amplifies specific worldviews, resonating with our own reality across multiple dimensions.

In a cave deprived of light, it becomes difficult to distinguish your shadow from someone else’s.
